ROT – Redundant, outdated, trivial information

In terms of migration this can mean removing data either in the source, or ignoring it with filters. Filtering data should be done with caution as many users will not fully understand this and “blame” the migration for lost data. Organizations should be encouraged to migrate everything to the target and perform clean up latter to avoid too much change and user confusion.

  • Duplication & backups
  • Data no longer being used
  • Information that isn’t helpful to the business / empty repositories

In terms of management – it should be used to find data that is not being used. Some organizations may do this on an on-going basis, in preparation for migration, or in general good practice.
